Will using the TheraBite system hurt?

You may experience some discomfort when you begin your therapy, especially if you have had pain and prolonged immobility. Initially you should be gentle and only stretch to your personal comfort level, with time and patience you will increase your opening and decrease the pain you are having, by gently increasing your spam.  Should you experience a different type of pain, like sharp pain during use or increased pain over time, you should always call you doctor just to make sure all is well.

How often should I use my TheraBite jaw motion rehab system?

Everyday.  During your initial therapy to 1) treat or prevent trismus from radiation, 2) for surgical rehabilitation, or 3) to treat joint dysfunction, you should use the device everyday following your doctor recommended protocol.

For long term management of trismus, 12 months after radiation therapy, you may taper down your therapy to less frequent weekly sessions with measurement and tracking of your opening to make sure you aren't losing range-of-motion.

Two Sample Protocols*

The 7-7-7:
Perform 7 sessions each day
Stretch 7 times each session
Hold each stretch for 7 seconds

The 5-5-30:
Perform 5 sessions each day
Stretch 5 times each session
Hold each stretch for 30 seconds

*These are examples only. Users should consult with a medical professional for protocols specific to their conditions. WARNING: IF YOU EXPERIENCE SHARP PAIN WHILE USING THE DEVICE, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY.  If the pain persists or recurs, contact your doctor.

How do I clean my TheraBite jaw motion rehab system

Usually just rinse the mouthpieces with water and allowing them to completely dry, is sufficient for regular use.  You can also dip the mouthpieces into mouthwash, and then rinse and dry for further sanitization.  If the mouthpieces and pads accumulate a layer of film or other matter, a simple light brushing with your toothbrush and toothpaste, followed by a rinse and dry will clean them.   NEVER fully submerge the Therabite device in water or wash in the dishwasher.

How long will I need to use my TheraBite jaw motion rehab system for?

That will depend on the issue.  Most importantly, follow the instructions on usage from your doctor or therapist.

For radiation fibrosis, you should use the system for at least a full year, as the fibrosis continues to deposit and grow for 6-12 months.  Then periodically measure and track your opening, as the fibrotic tissue will continue to contract for the rest of your life.

For TMJ dysfunction and post-surgical rehabilitation, you may only need to use their TheraBite as prescribed for 3 months, but others may need to use it for 6 months. It is always a good idea to keep your TheraBite jaw motion rehab system around… you never know if you may need it again.
