I had the pleasure of meeting Marcy Maksail , a lovely Speech and Language Pathologist from North Carolina, at the Ark-J Program in October 2018. Marcy is a cancer survivor who is currently living with xerostomia (dry mouth). She was kind enough to pass along her tried and true tips for xerostomia, mouth care and gum health. Thank you Marcy!

Recipe to Prevent Oral Thrush Due to Xerostomia

Ingredients: Food grade almond oil or coconut oil, baking soda, water (Marcy recommends almond oil for a lighter taste).

1. Mix 1-2 tablespoons baking soda with 1/2 cup warm water (warmer water helps baking soda dissolve but be careful the water is not hot).
2. Mix step number #1 with 1 tablespoon food grade almond oil (or coconut oil depending on preference).
3. Swish in mouth and then spit out.

Recommendations for very sensitive gums: Follow the directions above and use as recommended. Immediately following - either swish 1 tablespoon coconut oil and spit out or rub coconut oil directly onto the gums. This helps calm down mouth irritation.

For on the go relief: Marcy keeps plain coconut oil,  almond oil or vegetable glycerin mixed with water in our Salvate bottles to use as a moisture spray throughout the day.
